Marillion are a British rock band founded in 1978. Initially considered a progressive group, they have acquired sonorities close to indie-rock over the years.
In 1997 Marillion announced they would have not had their North America tour, because they didn't have money, but their fans decided not to abandon them.
An American engineer, Jeff Pelletier, organized a fundraising campaign on the web and he had a wonderful success. The goal to achieve was $ 30,000.
On 23 September 1997, the Chicago Tribune headline said: "British Band's Tour in the USA is Computer-generated" and declared that they had already collected $ 47,000.
Pelletier says: "People are giving money just to see what happens, because it's an incredible thing".
After the “Tour Fund”, relationship between Marillion and their internet fans has been constantly growing.
In 1999 with the album “Marillion.com” the rock band launched the new website, but the revolutionary idea was to ask fans a help to finance the production costs of their next album "Anoraknophobia", ordering it 1 year in advance.
In 2001, the project was advertised almost on every newspaper's titles! 12.000 fans received a special edition album. EMI distributed worldwide the album.
